Welcome to our new and improved blog! This has been a Cedar Ridge Academy blog for a number of years, but it has gone into disrepair. We are renewing it and revamping it in time to participate in the April A to Z Challenge. Come join us as we post once every day in April (except Sunday).
I wanted to spend a little bit of time introducing our theme for the April A to Z Challenge first off. I should introduce myself initially as the Social Studies teacher here at the school. We are a fully accredited high school with a blended learning model that encourages vigorous college and life preparation. As the Social Studies teacher, I want to make sure that my students are able to find information, report it in their own words, and write about it in a clear and concise way.
The A to Z Challenge is a great way for the students to step out of their comfort zones and give these skills a try with a real audience. All of the submissions will be anonymous to protect the confidentiality of our students since we are a therapeutic boarding school, but I promise that all of the ideas and submissions are student work.
Each student has randomly chosen their letter out of a hat and chosen a topic that has to do with the Social Studies class that they are in. As a result, over the next month we will all get to learn more about World Geography, World History, U.S. History, and U.S. Government. The students have been outlining their ideas this week and are working on getting their rough drafts ready for peer feedback this coming week.
I am excited to be participating with Vidya Sury’s blog hop to introduce our theme. She asks a great question about how our theme will attract interest. As a teacher, I really strive for our students have an authentic audience on their writing—so bring on the comments! They need to hear from you that they are being heard and understood. Tell them what they did well and what they can improve on. I am also hoping that the parents that follow this blog will be able to pick out their son’s or daughter’s writing and be able to see the growth that they have done in their academics.
Also please check out our main Cedar Ridge Academy blog post as we will be publishing A to Z themed posts throughout the month of April too!
